We are happy to share that Google have launched their new Pixels this week, and for the first time for Pixel phones, both models, Pixel 3 and Pixel 3XL, will have embedded wireless charging! Google took their innovation a step further by launching the Pixel stand – a wireless charger with additional capabilities. It can basically turn the Pixel 3 into a Google Home (with extra phone and productivity functions on top). Although we mostly knew that the devices will include embedded wireless charging, the Pixel Stand was an extremely nice surprise.
With the launch of the Pixel 3 line up, Google has joined other strong mobile players who have been including wireless charging in their devices.
Samsung, LG and Apple
Samsung adopted wireless charging back in 2015 with the Galaxy S6 and has since included wireless charging in all S and Note models (including the recent 2018 models S9, S9+ and Note9). It is now rumored that Samsung will include embedded wireless charging in its Galaxy A and even Galaxy J series (Digital Trends talk about it here). Samsung was also one of the first to launch a wireless charger capable of charging multiple devices in one location (Wireless Charger Duo). LG included embedded wireless charging in their G6 US model, which launched back in early 2017. Before that, LG offered various solutions to wirelessly charge their phones, but they were not embedded. Since then, the main LG models including G7 ThinQ, V35 ThinQ and V40 ThinQ launched this month all have embedded wireless charging. Apple started to include embedded wireless charging since September 2017, with the launch of iPhone 8, iPhone 8+ and iPhone X. All devices launched last month include embedded wireless charging as well: iPhone XS, iPhone XS MAX and iPhone XR. Although slightly late to the wireless charging game, Apple’s influence on the market has been significant, bringing embedded wireless charging mobile devices to more people than ever before.
Update 10/29/18
It’s pretty amazing how many mobile phones were launched since the Pixels with wireless charging! The latest from just a few days ago is the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3, which follows the previous model Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, both with embedded wireless charging. Huawei launched it’s latest premium mobile phones this month as well – Huawei Mate 20 Pro. This is the first time Huawei embeds wireless charging in a leading model. Huawei launched a special Porsche design earlier this year with wireless charging. The newest player to join the wireless party is Razer, the gaming specialist, which launched it’s Phone 2 with embedded wireless charging (the 1st phone didn’t have wireless charging).
Looking forward
We have all been expecting this and it’s clear that wireless charging is here to stay – it is now embedded in most phones launched in 2018. Of course we expect this trend to continue in 2019, while we will also see additional devices launch into the market with embedded wireless charging.
